Dr. Scott Anthony Jones, Director of Bands

Dr. Scott Anthony Jones serves as Director of the School of Music (SOM) and Director of Bands at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Dr. Jones oversees all aspects of this acclaimed institution, conducts the premiere Wind Symphony and leads the graduate wind conducting program, which he established in 2018. He also serves as Coordinator of the Music and Culture in Vienna Study Abroad Program. Prior to his 2022 appointment as SOM Director, Dr. Jones also taught courses in music education, undergraduate conducting and wind literature and served as Faculty Facilitator for the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Effective Teaching Practices Course. Dr. Jones is the recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Alumni in Music Award from Grand Valley State University and the 2020 William J. Hall Faculty Excellence Award from the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Under his direction, the Wind Symphony has garnered national recognition for its outstanding musicianship, virtuosity and innovation, placing 2nd in the 2020 American Prize Competition, 3rd in the 2020 Ernst Bacon Award for the Performance of American Music Competition, performing at the 2019 Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and giving world premieres by composers Zhou Tian, Roy Magnuson, Jess Turner, Nathan Hudson and Katahj Copley.
Prior to Kingsville, Dr. Jones was Assistant Director of Bands and Associate Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Georgia, where he worked with the 440-member Redcoat Marching Band, directed Concert Winds and Basketball Band, and taught courses in conducting and orchestration. Dr. Jones has also held positions at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, Morgan State University, Maryland Conservatory of Music, The Peabody Institute, and The Highlands School in Maryland.
Dr. Jones holds the Doctor of Music degree in Wind Conducting from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, the Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Master of Music in Saxophone from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, and the Bachelor of Music from Grand Valley State University. Dr. Jones serves frequently as a guest clinician throughout Texas and the United States. He currently holds memberships in CBDNA, NAfME, TMEA, TBA and is an honorary brother of Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Dr. Amy J. Bovin, Interim Associate Director of Bands

Dr. Amy J. Bovin has been a prominent music educator for over a decade, teaching bands at the secondary and collegiate levels, presenting at conferences and workshops and conducting ensembles around the globe, and completing research on the topics of music literacy using technology and gendered experiences in instrumental music. Her research articles can be found in both national and international peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Bovin completed her Ph.D. in Music Education at The University of Hartford’s The Hartt School where her dissertation was “The Experiences of Female High School Band Directors: A National Survey Study”. During her residency, Dr. Bovin assisted with the instrumental method courses and was the instructor on record for the undergraduate instrumental conducting courses. Dr. Bovin completed the degree of Masters of Music in Instrumental Conducting at The University of Connecticut where she was a graduate assistant for the UConn Athletic Bands and a Teaching Assistant with the conducting classes and ensembles. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Science in Education from UConn.
Dr. Bovin was chosen as a participant at the 2019 International Conducting Workshop Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria, as a recipient of a 2018 CBDNA Mike Moss Conducting Grant, and as one of three conductors internationally to participate in the 2015 Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy. She also had the experience of conducting the United States Coast Guard Band at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, and was a multi-year conductor for the Hartford Opera Theater’s New in November Series. At the 2016 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, she received the Citation of Merit award from Women’s Band Directors International for "outstanding contribution to bands and band music". Dr. Bovin is the Immediate Past President of Connecticut Music Educators Association, the Connecticut State representative for Women's Band Directors International, the Regional Representative for the Southwest/Rocky Mountains region of the Practicing Musician Professional Development Roundtable, an editorial board member for The Science Journal of Education, and a member of The National Association of Music Education, the International Society for Music Education, Instrumental Music Teacher Educators, the Society for Research in Music Education, the Society for Music Teacher Education, College Band Directors’ National Association, and the National Band Association. She was also a National Officer of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority and held additional offices on the district and chapter level.

Mr. Edward Moncada, Adjunct Assistant Director of Bands
Mr. Moncada is a graduate of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, where he received the Bachelor of Music degree with Teacher Certification and the Master of Music degree in Saxophone Performance. For the past 8 years, he has been an active musician and music educator in the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas area.
As a saxophonist, Mr. Moncada has performed in a variety of classical and jazz settings. During his time at TAMUK, he performed with the university’s premiere ensembles, including the Wind Symphony, Jazz Band I, Saxophone Quartet 1, and Jazz Combo 1. While participating in university ensembles, he has performed on tours of South Texas, at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and has shared the stage with artists such as Jeff “Tain” Watts, Byron Stripling, Wycliffe Gordon, Eric Marienthal, Gordon Goodwin, and Doc Severinsen. Mr. Moncada has also participated in professional performing ensembles including the the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, the McAllen All-Star Jazz Band, and the Rio Grande Valley Jazz Orchestra.
As an educator, Mr. Moncada has worked as a technician and consultant for a variety of recognized band programs including Harlingen High School, San Benito High School, and Rio Hondo High School. He has worked as a clinician for jazz improvisation clinics, saxophone camps, summer band camps, jazz improvisation clinics and TMEA All-State Etude Clinics in Region 15 and Region 28. While attending graduate school, Mr. Moncada held a Graduate Assistantship in which he assisted the TAMUK faculty and staff with instructing the Javelina Marching Band and TAMUK concert bands. He currently holds a membership in TMEA and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
