Fall 2019 Information For New Members
Summer camp with the Javelina Marching Band will be your introduction to the group and to the entire semester. Our week of camp sets the tone for the rest of the season, and the amount of work that we do during the camp gives us a great head start for a successful production.
The first day of camp is mostly getting settled in and receiving everything you need for the week ahead. Check-in is Wednesday, August 14th from 9:00 am -11:00 am at Bishop Turner residence hall. (Go west on Santa Gertrudis, through the circle drive, past Lynch Hall, and Bishop Turner is the next building on your right past Lynch Hall.) When you arrive at TAMUK you will go straight to your dorm to check-in and receive your dorm key. You can then go ahead and move your belongings into your dorm. Remember, you may have to move out of this room at the end of camp, so please keep that in mind.
Once you’re settled in at your dorm, you can change into your marching clothes, grab your instrument (if you have one) and make your way to the Band Annex for registration at 11:00 a.m. The Band Annex is located just to the west of the music building on Engineering Avenue. The entrance is the double doors on the NW corner of the building right next to the tennis courts. When you get to the annex you will get in line with all of our other incoming members. In this line you will go through a series of registration stations where you will receive your dot book, your band t-shirt, your show t-shirt, your name-tag, and your locker number. We provide piccolos, clarinets (to freshmen only), tenor saxes, and all brass except trumpets.
At 1:00 pm we will have an orientation for all members in the music annex. At this meeting you will meet the leadership staff and we will go through the Band Handbook and other important information for the season.
At 2:00 pm we will have music rehearsal, so be ready to play the marching show . (If your section leader decides there may also be a sectional at this time.)
At 5:00 pm there is a Welcome BBQ at the Quad, right next to Mesquite Village. There will be free food, and you will have a chance to meet many of the Javelina Band members, both new and old. There will be fun and games, and lots of people to meet before our first day at work.
After this, all NEW members will head out to the marching field (located on the east side of the football stadium), for a quick look at marching fundamentals and reading coordinate sheets on the field. After this, you can head to your dorm for a good night’s rest for the week ahead. Be sure to drink a lot of water each night so you don't get dehydrated the next day.
After the first day, the real work and fun begin. For the rest of camp you will need to wear marching clothes (no jeans or sandals), your instrument, and a non-disposable water bottle. We will be outside first thing in the morning working on marching fundamentals, and we will be moving up and down the field through various exercises before long. Our leadership staff, made up of drum majors, techs, and section leaders, will always be there to help you if you need anything. Dinner will be provided during the week, and there will always be water available outside to refill your water jug.
Please be sure to get a lot of rest at nights throughout the week, and drink as much water as possible to keep you feeling strong. Be prepared to work extremely hard, and to spend long periods of time in the sun. We will be indoors for most of our music rehearsals and sectionals, but all of our marching will take place outside, so we need to be ready to combat the South Texas heat.
I assure you that this first week of camp will be a positive and challenging experience, and it will be the beginning of a great season for us as a group. If you have any further questions feel free to contact me or anyone from our leadership staff, but rest assured that you will have everything you need, and you will receive the necessary information as it becomes relevant throughout camp.
We look forward to having you be part of The Pride of South Texas!
